How to link Aadhar and pan card online.

There are different ways to link your Aadhaar and PAN card online. One of them is to use the Income Tax e-filing portal. Here are the steps you need to follow:


  • Visit https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal
  • Under the ‘Quick Links’ section, you will find the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option, click on it.
  • On the next page, enter your name, mobile number, Aadhaar number, and PAN.
  • Verify the information that is provided by clicking on the ‘I validate my Aadhaar Details’ option.
  • Click on ‘Continue’.
  • A pop-up message will inform you that your Aadhaar has been successfully linked to your PAN.
  • You can also link your Aadhaar and PAN by sending an SMS to 567678 or 56161 in this format: UIDPAN<space><12 digit Aadhaar><space><10 digit PAN>.


Please note that you may have to pay a fee for linking your Aadhaar and PAN if you do it after 31 March 2022. The fee amount depends on whether you have filed your income tax returns for previous years or not. How to check status of Aadhaar-PAN link.


You can check the status of your Aadhaar-PAN link online by following these steps:


  • Visit https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal
  • Under the ‘Quick Links’ section, you will find the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option, click on it.
  • Enter your PAN and Aadhaar details.
  • Click on the ‘Check status’ option.
  • Here, you should be able to see whether your PAN Card and Aadhaar card are linked or not1.
  • Alternatively, you can also login to the e-filing portal and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ in the profile section. There you can view the status of your Aadhaar-PAN link

Benefits of linking Aadhaar and PAN.


There are many benefits of linking your Aadhaar and PAN. Some of them are:


  • It will reduce the chances that one person is having more than one PAN card and due to this people cannot conceal their taxable income.
  • It will make it easier for you to file your income tax returns as you will not need to submit any receipt or e-signature.
  • It will give the Income Tax Department an audit trail of all your transactions, making Aadhaar card an important document for all transactions.
  • It will eliminate the possibility of fake identity and financing illegal activities such as drug trafficking with multiple PAN cards.

Linking your Aadhaar and PAN is also mandatory as per Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act. If you fail to do so before 31 March 2023, your PAN will become inoperative and you may have to pay a penalty.

  • If you don’t link your Aadhaar and PAN before 31 March 2023, you may face some consequences such as:
  • Your PAN will become inoperative and you will not be able to use it for any transactions that require PAN.
  • You will not be able to file your income tax returns as Aadhaar is mandatory for ITR filing.
  • You may have to pay a penalty of Rs. 1000 for not linking your Aadhaar and PAN.
  • You may face difficulties in accessing government services like subsidies, passport applications, and bank account opening that require both Aadhaar and PAN.
  • You may not be able to get a new PAN card if your old one is damaged or lost as Aadhaar is required for applying for a new PAN card.

Therefore, it is advisable to link your Aadhaar and PAN as soon as possible to avoid these consequences.

Can I link more than one PAN with my Aadhaar?

No, you cannot link more than one PAN with your Aadhaar. You should have only one PAN as per the Income Tax Act. If you have more than one PAN, you should surrender the additional PAN cards and link only the valid PAN with your Aadhaar.   • Online: Visit the Income Tax Department website and go to the ‘Surrender Duplicate PAN’ option. Enter the details of the duplicate PAN number(s) and the PAN you wish to retain as well your personal details such as full name, date of birth (date of incorporation in case of companies) and contact details. Submit the form.

  • Offline: Fill up Form 49A for Change or Correction in PAN, mention the PAN number to be surrendered and submit the form to the nearest UTI or NSDL TIN facilitation centre. Write a letter addressed to the Assessing Officer of your jurisdiction and mention your personal details such as the full name on your PAN card, date of birth (or date of incorporation in case of companies), PAN card number to be retained and details of duplicate PAN card being surrendered. Enclose a copy of Duplicate PAN to be surrendered along with Acknowledgment Copy obtained from NSDL TIN facilitation center.

You should keep a copy of acknowledgment for future reference. You should also check the status of your PAN surrender request online or offline after some time
